Each of these stories may seem impossible at first. Can you figure out the solution?

1. A man and his son were on a tour of an atomic power plant. In the control room, the boy asked if he could see the controls for the reactor core. The head physicist said yes, and explained how the controls worked. After the boy left, the head physicist turned to an assistant and said, "That was my son." How could that be?

2. Three kids from Bristol went for a walk. About a mile into the walk, they came to a deep, wide river. There was no bridge. They didn’t have a boat or raft, or any materials to make one. None of them could swim. How did they get across?

3. Lisa walked out the back door of the farmhouse on a Thursday afternoon and found a man’s pipe, a scarf and three lumps of coal lying on the wet grass near the barn. The nearest neighbours lived a mile away, and no-one had visited that day. Where did the objects come from?

4. A true story: a white horse jumped over a castle and landed on a bishop, who immediately disappeared from the landscape. Where did this take place?

Some of these stories are quite easy, where as a few are not. Nonetheless I will give a shot at answering them all.

1. I see two possible variants for this story. Firstly, the man giving the tour was the head physicist, who was giving his own son a tour of his tour. Secondly, this could be a gender trap. The head physicist is in fact the mother of the boy and wife of the man. Which is correct though is still up for grabs.

2. This one is a little bit more difficult but here are a few options. Firstly, I think that the river could be dried up. If there is no water in the river it is not a problem to cross. However, there most likely is water so this creates a problem. An easy solution is that a ferry or boat services is need by that boys could use. Lastly, the most hidden variant is that the river is frozen. If the river is frozen then it is not a problem to cross. The only issue I have is that if it is so cold that the river is frozen, who would go for such a long walk?

3. This is the easiest of the bunch. Referring back to the frozen river, Lisa has seen the remains of her dead friend. Given the wet ground and interesting articles left behind, one can guess that a snow man was killed in the night. Lisa must have made a snow man with the last of the snow but during the night the warm weather melted him. Leaving the only clues, the wet ground and parculier things, for the police and us to solve it.

4. Another easy one for anybody who likes to play games. This must be the classical case of chess. The bishop has been jumped by the horse and removed by the sad player.

Now remains this little puzzle. My girlfriend dropped her earring into her cup of tea this morning. Amazing after she got said earring out of said tea neither her hands nor her earring were wet. How on earth is this possible? Somebody please help me!

Thank you for being the bravest to post your answers here! You have solved all the problems correctly: The physicist was the boy's mother, the river was frozen, the snowman melted and the true story happened in a game of chess.

As far as your girlfriend's earring is concerned, was the teacup empty, or does the expression "her cup of tea" involve some tea inside?

Yeah I know the answers to some stories, I guess reading Sherlock Holmes has paid off.

Regarding the cup of tea. Her teacup had something in it. Yes the expression "her cup of tea" does involve some tea. Think carefully about what it means to have tea in your cup.

Another way to look at this problem. My student put some coffee into my glass during class when all of a sudden his glasses fell off. Straight into my coffee yet again they were dry as a bone. Now how can somebodies glasses fall into coffee without getting wet? Or an earring into tea without getting wet?

Maybe it is time to call Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson...

Now those are the answers we are looking for. Such a simple overlooked answer yet such a tricky question. People immediately assume each time that a cup of tea means a full cup with water. They hardly ever think of the tea bag or tea leaves.
